Worst oil-tanker spills
1. March 1978: Amoco Cadiz grounded near Brest, France, 223,000 metric tons of crude oil.
2. August 1983: Castillo de Belver exploded and broke in two off the coast of South Africa, 190,000 metric tons.
3. July 1979: Atlantic Empress, 160,000 metric tons of crude oil off Tobago.
4. March 1967: Torrey Canyon, 119,000 metric tons of crude oil off the Scilly Islands in Britain.
5. January 1993: Braer grounded off the Shetland Island, 85,000 metric tons.
6. December 1992: Aegean Sea, 80,000 metric tons of crude oil near Coruna Spain.
7. November 2002: Prestige split in two off the coast of Spain while carrying 77,000 metric tons of heavy fuel oil; it spilled 10,000 to 20,000 metric tons before sinking with the rest of the cargo.
8. February 1996: Sea Empress, 72,000 metric tons of crude oil near Milford Haven, Wales.
9. April 1991: Haven, over 50,000 metric tons off Genoa, Italy.
10. March 1989: Exxon Valdez grounded in Prince William Sound, Alaska, 38,000 metric tons of crude oil.
11. December 1999: Erika, 13,000 metric tons of heavy diesel oil off the coast of Brittany, France.
